How Long to 4.7 Stars?
A star rating is a mean, so the answer is exact arithmetic — not a guess. Put in your rating, review count and how often you actually ask, and see the reviews needed, the months it takes, and whether your freshness clears the bar buyers say they use.
Your Review Profile
Your headline rating on the profile that matters most — usually Google. Use the number shown publicly, not an internal average.
Total published reviews on that profile. A high count is protective: it also makes the rating much harder to move.
68% of consumers require at least four stars and 31% require 4.5 or better (BrightLocal, 2026). Above 4.8 the returns flatten and the effort rises sharply.
Finished jobs, not leads. This is your pool of people who could plausibly review you.
Honestly. Most contractors believe they ask everyone and actually ask when the job went unusually well.
Depends almost entirely on how you ask. A text with a direct link while the tech is still on site beats an email three days later by a wide margin.
The mean rating of reviews you are earning now. If it is below your target you can never reach the target — the calculator will tell you so.
Time to target
21.3 mo
96 more reviews at 4.9 stars moves you from 4.3 to 4.7. At 4.5 reviews a month, that is 21.3 months.
Your velocity
Freshness
13.5
reviews in a rolling 90-day window at your current velocity. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 74% of consumers prioritise reviews from the last three months — a strong rating with nothing recent behind it reads as a business that used to be good.
Where your rating sits against what buyers say they require
From BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a survey of 1,002 US adult consumers. 97% read reviews for local businesses.
The 4.0 bar
Cleared
68% of consumers demand at least four stars. Below it you are excluded from consideration by roughly two buyers in three before anyone reads a word you wrote.
The 4.5 bar
Not yet
31% require 4.5 or better. This is the band most competitive home-service markets are already fighting in.
Replying to reviews
80%
are more likely to use a business that responds to all reviews, and 42% are unlikely to use one that ignores feedback. Half view generic templated replies negatively, so replying badly is its own risk.

How does the rating maths work?
A rating is the mean of every review, so after adding k new reviews averaging r it becomes (current × count + r × k) ÷ (count + k). Solving that for k gives the reviews needed to hit a target exactly, with no modelling involved. The only estimate on the page is your own request and response rate, which is why those are the inputs to be honest about.
Why is recency scored separately from the rating?
Because buyers score them separately. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers found 74% prioritise reviews from the last three months, 32% look for feedback from the past two weeks, and 18% only trust reviews posted within one week. A high rating built entirely from reviews two years old fails a test the average never shows.
What if the target comes back unreachable?
Then the reviews you are earning now average at or below the rating you want, and no volume of them will lift the mean to it. That is a service or selection problem rather than a marketing one. Fix what the recent reviews are actually saying before spending anything on getting more of them.

Review Questions.
How many reviews do I need to raise my star rating?
A star rating is a mean, so the answer is exact arithmetic rather than an estimate: reviews needed equals your current count multiplied by the gap to your target, divided by the difference between your target and the average rating of your new reviews. The calculator does that division for you and converts it into months at your actual request rate.
Why does a high review count make my rating harder to move?
Because each new review is a smaller share of the average. Moving from 4.3 to 4.7 with 48 existing reviews takes far fewer new five-star reviews than the same move with 400. This is the main reason established businesses with an old bad patch struggle — the fix is volume over time, and there is no shortcut.
What star rating do consumers actually require?
68% demand at least four stars and 31% require 4.5 or better, from BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adult consumers. 92% consider star ratings when choosing a business at all, and 97% read reviews for local businesses. Below four stars you are filtered out by roughly two buyers in three before anyone reads your reviews.
Why does the calculator show a separate freshness number?
Because rating and recency are judged separately by buyers. 74% of consumers prioritise reviews from the last three months, 32% look for feedback from the past two weeks, and 18% only trust reviews posted within one week. A 4.9 with nothing new in a year reads as a business that used to be good.
What is a healthy review velocity for a contractor?
Enough to keep a meaningful number landing inside a rolling 90-day window, which for most home service businesses means several a month rather than several a year. The calculator's freshness panel shows what your current ask rate produces in 90 days — if that number is close to zero, recency is your problem regardless of your rating.
Why does the tool say my target is not reachable?
Because the average rating of your new reviews is at or below your target. A mean cannot be pulled above the value of the things being added to it. If new reviews average 4.5 you can never reach 4.7 by volume alone — the fix is service quality or how you select which customers to ask, not more requests.
What actually moves the share of customers who leave a review?
How and when you ask. A text with a direct link while the technician is still on site outperforms an email sent three days later by a wide margin, because the job is still fresh and the phone is already in the customer's hand. Most contractors set the ask rate high in this calculator and the response rate low, when the real problem is usually the reverse.
Should I reply to reviews?
Yes, to all of them, and carefully. 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to all reviews and 42% are unlikely to use one that ignores feedback — but 50% view generic templated responses negatively, so a copy-pasted thank-you can cost you more than silence. 19% expect a same-day reply and 81% expect one within a week.
Do reviews affect my paid advertising too?
On Google Local Services Ads, directly — review count and rating carry ranking weight, so a weak profile suppresses impressions on the channel with the best economics in the published data. SearchLight's February 2026 benchmark of 888 contractors put LSA at a 43.9% book rate and $233 per paying customer, and a poor review profile is the cheapest way to be excluded from it.
Are reviews cheaper than buying leads?
Structurally, yes, because they compound and leads do not. A $41.26 Meta lead buys one opportunity; a five-star review earned this month is still working on your conversion rate in two years. That is an argument for doing both rather than either — reviews raise the close rate on the leads you are already paying for.
How many review sites do I need to be on?
Fewer than you fear, but more than one. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found consumers use an average of six different review sites, and that consistent sentiment across multiple sites is the single most important factor for 56% of them. Google first, then whichever second platform your customers actually mention.
Can I ask customers to remove or change a bad review?
You can respond publicly and resolve the underlying issue, and sometimes people update on their own. What you cannot do is gate requests so only happy customers are asked, or offer anything of value in exchange for a review — both breach the major platforms' policies and risk the whole profile. The calculator assumes you are asking everyone.
Does one bad review matter much?
Less than contractors fear once volume is healthy, and a great deal when volume is thin. At 20 reviews a single one-star drops the mean noticeably; at 200 it barely registers. Steady velocity is the real insurance policy, which is what this calculator is measuring.
